PART I: ENGLISH LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT This course explores the stages of language acquisition and English language development. Session topics will provide participants with current techniques for cooperative learning, multiple intelligences, applied formal language, social context, vocabulary building, applying prior and background knowledge, interactive learning, text adaption, assessment techniques, and other best practices. PART I: UNDERSTANDING POVERTY This course provides an overview of the issues and challenges of teaching diverse learners and students from poverty. The presenter imparts information on fostering resiliency, building a sense of community within the classroom, teaching to student modalities and the effects of poverty on student learning. Particular emphasis is placed on working with generational poverty, different modalities of learning, and process skills. The lecturer illustrates a collaborative approach through building relationships, understanding bias, setting goals, and following through with these established objectives.

PART II: CLOSING THE ACHIEVEMENT GAP (Second-half of a two-part series)This course will provide teachers of any grade level and discipline with timely information, strategies, and “best practices” relating to teaching today’s diverse learners in the regular classroom. Participants will examine the factors that make students different and the instructional implications for teaching decision-making and problem-solving skills to diverse populations.
