Teaching Diverse Learners Kit
This kit addresses key issues for struggling subgroups. The following courses are included:
-
Motivating Underachievers Using Response to Intervention and Differentiated Instruction
Presented by Carolyn Coil
In this course, you will explore underachiever patterns and prototypes, illustrated through student profiles drawn from Coil’s real life experiences. You will learn to identify the underachievers in your classroom, including gifted students and those identified for special education. You will also learn to employ targeted intervention strategies and key progress-monitoring techniques, to help students succeed. Learn more.
-
Collaboration in the Inclusive Classroom
Presented by Cara Shores
A successful collaborative classroom calls for a subtle and complex alliance between teachers, between teachers and students, and between students. Presenter Cara Shores walks educators through the steps and strategies for developing collaborative and co-teaching teams to implement inclusive teaching practices in the classroom. Educators will learn to recognize the characteristics of effective teams, including how team members define their roles, share responsibilities, and leverage each other's strengths.
-
Teaching English Language Learners Across the Curriculum
Presented by Elizabeth Jiménez
This course presents a dynamic look at teaching English language learners, teaching educators to increase the effectiveness of instructional delivery and to create a culturally responsive classroom. Incorporated into the course are classroom visits that illustrate the principles presented in the course, discussion panels with teachers and middle school students, plus an interview with an actual student on his experience as an English language learner. Learn more.
-
Meeting the Needs of Gifted Learners in a Regular Classroom
Presented by Susan Winebrenner and Dina Brulles
The Schoolwide Gifted Cluster Grouping Model (SCGM) is designed to give educators the tools to provide full-time services for gifted students in the regular classroom without major budget implications. Teachers learn the essentials of implementation and execution and experience classroom demonstrations of SCGM’s differentiated instruction that help them steer students toward higher achievement. Learn more.
-
Differentiated Instruction and Assessment in the Middle Grades
Presented by Rick Wormeli
Educators learn the tools to create lesson plans and assessment systems that enable them first to discover and then to meet the different needs of their students. Formative assessment takes a primary role in the differentiated classroom providing feedback, documenting progress, and guiding instructional decisions. Educators will learn to use assessments to communicate rather than to compensate or reward, and educators will scrutinize grading systems to identify when they are unfairly norm-referenced or biased, and they will acquire the skills to convert assessments to nonjudgmental, criteria-referenced systems instead. Learn more.
An added bonus for teachers - the ability to receive graduate credit from Adams State College (additional university fees apply) for each course. Districts can also approve courses for recertification.
