What is "character"? Our courses in this subject area introduce historical and modern concepts of "character." Educators study how to create a positive moral culture in classrooms and schools to counteract the effects of a culture of violence, drugs, and gang activity. These courses focus on creating a classroom environment conducive to learning, where positive relationships are prized. Educators learn to create a positive moral climate for solving conflicts, to encourage students to take personal responsibility for their actions, and to identify at-risk students. The courses introduce the concept of "igniting" leadership at all levels and illustrate methods to leverage community involvement from businesses, faith communities, parents, and coaches.
