Literacy deficits can plague secondary school classrooms. Our course in this subject area provide both a history of literacy and practical techniques for improvement. The course presenters illuminate the historical and legislative framework for school-wide literacy and its application for today's diverse learners. Educators review best practices in literacy development based on current research in learning styles theory and learn practical techniques to help students overcome obstacles in achieving fluency in reading. The relationship between reading and writing gets its due here, as does a discussion of how ESL, learning disabilities, and multiculturalism relate to literacy.To combat literacy problems, these courses explore best practicesbased on current research in learning styles theoryin literacy development. The courses explore such Units as adult role models, adolescent literacy, literacy and technology, media literacy, lesson design and assessment, all geared toward necessary change in the secondary school classroom.
