Course Highlight: Motivating Underachievers Using Response to Intervention and Differentiated Instruction by Carolyn Coil*

Stepping in to assist underachievers before a pattern of failure becomes engrained can lead to improved student success in school. Learn to identify the prototypical causes of underachievement - including fear of failure, low self-esteem, negative peer pressure, and lack of motivation - and then locate the underachievers in your classroom, including gifted students and those eventually identified for special education. You will learn how to select specific research-based interventions to target those students, using the three-tier Response to Intervention (RTI) system to reverse a pattern of underachievement.

Through the combined efforts of both differentiated instruction (DI) and RTI, become a flexible planner who supplies students with plentiful choices and frequently monitors students' progress, to help expand their strengths and become lifelong learners. Explore the crucial role of flexible groupings as an essential strategy for assisting underachievers and improving academic results.

Learn how to:

  • Develop criteria to identify, categorize, and differentiate instruction for underachievers in the classroom
  • Pre-assess students to determine and implement appropriate intervention strategies
  • Practice individual, small-group, and class-wide interventions
  • Implement motivating strategies that address student need, modalities, and learning styles
  • Assess students for problems with organization, study skills, or test-taking skills and develop RTI strategies to manage these problems
  • Devise and employ RTI strategies to assist students in taking responsibility for their own learning
  • Select, structure, and vary learning groups
  • Compact curriculum and scaffold and tier lessons

How can RTI & DI help you with your underachievers?

It is through these two foundations that teachers are able to pinpoint the needs of the learners and adjust their teaching techniques accordingly. The ASCD Newsletter discusses the way in which attention has been taken away from test scores and focused more on enhancing instruction to meet the learning differences of students.
